In Social Studies, we have been talking about the past, present, and future.  We learned that kindergarten is in the past, 1st grade is the present, and in the future, we will be in 2nd grade.

There are four ways to learn about the past:

  • Pictures
  • People
  • Written Records
  • Artifacts
We have been discussing how we can easily learn from the past through stories that others tell us. For example, I shared that my Great-Grandmother was a one-room schoolhouse teacher. The kiddos could not believe that! Our lesson was sparked by many questions and lead to a wonderful discussion!!
We also read a book called “When I Was Young In The Mountains“. This book really helped us to better understand how different things were back then. There were no cars, no electricity, no running water, no indoor bathrooms, and so on.. We made many charts showing what we have learned!
We also had a lot of fun in the Computer Lab creating our very own Family Trees! These are currently hung in our classroom to share with others, but will come home soon :)
I think I have enjoyed teaching and talking about History and the Past just as much as the kids! It has been a wonderful unit to teach. If you have not heard about it from you student, please ask them to share what he or she has learned!
