Schut Greenhouses to learn more about how the sun helps plants grow.  This field trip is only for the students in our class and will last for a short half-hour to forty-five minutes.  We will definitely be back in time for our JUST WRITE Celebration which will begin at 2:45 in the afternoon on that same day.  Mark your calendars!!!  All parents, siblings, and grandparents are invited to join us to experience a first grade writing celebration and tour the school to check out the amazing writers at Georgetown!!!  JUST WRITE t-shirt orders were sent home last week.  If you would like to get a shirt, make sure to send in your order by May 7.

This week marks the end of our first trimester!  I can hardly believe it!!!  I will be sending home several assessments with your child this week for you to check out before conferences.  Let me know if you have any questions as you look them over.

A quick homework note, there will be no math homework this week due to the assessment for Unit 2 and pre-assessment for Unit 3 that all the first graders will be taking.  Also, your child will not bring home a WEB book on Thursday!  Enjoy the long weekend!! :)

See you at the Halloween Party!

Math Update

During our math time this week we continued to break apart larger numbers into smaller partners.  Specifically, we used whiteboards and markers, counters, stair steppers, and activities from our math workbook to visualize the partners, switch partners, and doubles partners for the numbers 8, 9, and 10.  Challenging your first grader to write and show each set of partners in a variety of ways has helped to increase their number sense and flexibility with these numbers.

We also continued to use our knowledge of partners and patterns to practice our addition (+0, +1, +2) and subtraction (-0, -1, -2) facts.  This week in particular, we practiced adding and subtracting doubles partners (1+1, 2-1, 2+2, 4-2, 3+3, 6-3, etc.), and discovered that a number minus itself equals 0 (8-8 = 0).  Next week, Tuesday or Wednesday, we will take our Unit 1 math assessment, and the following day we will pretest for Unit 2.

***Additionally, last Wednesday, all the Georgetown first graders took a computerized math assessment, which they will take three times this year, to help pinpoint specific math areas that need extra review.  The information from this assessment is essential in making sure that your child has all the support he or she needs to be right on grade level with their math skills.  If your child is struggling with a certain math concept or skill, I will be in touch to let you know of ways that we are working to strengthen these skills at school and to provide ideas for additional practice at home!***

Thank you for supporting your first grade mathematician!

Math Update

Our first grade mathematicians worked very hard this week! It was a busy, busy, busy assessment week for all of them! They proved their skills and expertise with the Unit 4 assessment mid-week. Their hard work and dedication to this unit really shined through! On Thursday of this week, our little math experts took the Unit 4 Benchmark also. This Benchmark was a mixture of math problems from all of the previous units. Everyone did a fantastic job!

Coming up next week, we will get new Math Switch groups and we will begin working with coins again :)
